Elegant Regency Period figured mahogany sideboard/buffet with ample storage
Elegantly simple yet stunning sideboard from the English Regency Period (c.1820). Probably made by a provincial cabinet maker, the piece features beautifully figured mahogany veneered doors and drawer fronts, solid mahogany full height legs and top, and good quality single sheet timber for the non-visible bits like drawer bottoms. It has its original brass drop handles throughout and brass keyhole escutcheons.
The sideboard has two roomy cupboards, one with a half shelf and one with a full shelf. Two deep drawers (9 and 10" deep respectively) and a cutlery tray accessed by a recess when the bottom drawer is pulled out. The cutlery tray features its original peach coloured baize and has been professionally repaired in the distant past with a new dovetail (see photos).
For its age, this piece is in good condition. There are many scratches, dings etc commensurate with its long life. One of the six fretwork decorative pieces is long missing but its absence does not detract. The top drawer has some historical damage. One of the cupboard locks is missing, but the other is present so a matching replacement should be easily sourced. Overall, it speaks of quality and with the right conservation/restoration would be a piece worthy of a museum or stately home. As it stands it is a sturdy, capacious piece of furniture, which would add a touch of period elegance to any living space without being dark or overpowering.
