Scribology - Heritage Notebooks
Made from heritage leathers that were the last to be made in UK tanneries before they closed down (such as Clayton’s in Chesterfield, Derbyshire - pictured), these notebooks are something special. The leather used is veg tan leather, made in the traditional way using oak bark and other plant based materials. It looks, feels and smells beautiful.
Here we showcase our very special notebooks - those made with the unique Heritage leathers that set our notebooks apart from others. Choose from a midori travellers’ style notebook in a range of crisp, wax tanned ‘pull up’ leathers that patinate and change their patterns as the leather moves and folds; classic veg tanned black bridle leather with a beautiful waxy finish; or our collaborations with Rainbow Makery Design for hand stitched wrapped journals/sketchbooks in hand dyed, light weight veg tan leather and/or the pull up leathers mentioned above. A gorgeous, completely hand made leather covered journal or sketchbook. Made from a lightweight heritage veg tan, salvaged from the now closed Spire Tannery in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The leather has been hand dyed a beautiful rich Bournville chocolate brown colour and is both stiff and supple for a journal that holds its shape but still feels lovely to handle.
Inside there are 60 sheets (120 pages) of blank recycled 170gsm cartridge paper in 5 gatherings or signatures. Each signature is hand sewn directly into the cover with a long stitch, using a variegated waxed thread for a stunning spine. The leather wraps around and the journal is held closed with a thong made from the same leather, but dyed mulberry purple for a subtle contrast.

This journal/sketchbook was made as part of a competition/challenge set by Identity Leather to make the best use of one hide. It is the only one left of the two I made in this size and is a one-off in this colour, so this is a truly unique item.

Each signature is hand sewn directly into the cover with a long stitch, using a variegated waxed thread for a stunning spine. The leather wraps around and the journal is held closed with a thong made from the same leather, but dyed a dark pink for a subtle contrast.

This one is a rich chocolate brown and has lovely mottling.
As this is a finite and not reproducible batch of characterful leather, we've decided to make a limited run of Heritage Journals with it - to offer you a piece of Derbyshire history that will age beautifully and bring you years of joy. Each part of the hide is different in its colouration and feel, so though these notebooks are similar, each is completely unique and will have different markings and characteristics.
A5 in size, we've designed this one with black metal eyelets, a rich dark red waxy veg tan bullhide leather tag and burgundy elastics throughout for an aesthetically satisfying colour palette that looks and feels just right.
