Scribology - Veg Tan Notebooks
Made in the traditional way using oak bark and other plant based materials, veg tan leather looks, feels and smells beautiful. Veg tan leather has its own special qualities - it is both softer and more durable than chrome tan leathers, and develops a patina as it ages. It is also more environmentally friendly, due to its production methods.
This collection includes our heritage notebooks for completeness as they too are made from veg tan leathers. The more “standard” are no less sumptuous, with a lustrous feel and gorgeous colouring. As veg tan leather produces sturdier covers, we have chosen to make some of them a little wider with two spine elastics, to accommodate 4 inserts - perfect for project management or bullet journalling.

A gorgeous, completely hand made leather covered mini journal or sketchbook. Made from a lightweight heritage veg tan, salvaged from the now closed Spire Tannery in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The leather has been hand dyed a beautiful rich Bournville chocolate brown colour and is both stiff and supple for a journal that holds its shape but still feels lovely to handle.
Inside there are 33 sheets (66 pages) of coloured blank 80gsm origami paper in 3 gatherings or signatures, each topped and tailed with a sheet of marble patterned origami paper to add colour and interest. Each signature is hand sewn directly into the cover with a long stitch, using a variegated waxed thread for a stunning spine. The leather wraps around and the journal is held closed with a thong made from the same leather, but dyed a dark pink for a subtle contrast.

A6 rich brown leather refillable notebook cover, made from a high quality, heavy embossed veg tan leather. Green, pink and yellow metal eyelets and a bright teal leather closure tag make this notebook that bit more unusual. Black elastics throughout.
A5 black leather refillable notebook cover, made from a beautiful, sturdy (2mm thick ) black veg tan leather which retains that lovely leather smell. Has gunmetal coloured metal eyelets and a wider dark pink leather closure tag which accommodates 4 dot grid notebook refills (swap to lined on request). One spine elastic is bright blue, the other purple, with matching elastic for the jump bands, the closure band is a contrasting light blue. Veg tan leather will patinate and scratch faster than chrome tan leather, giving your notebook character and a lived and loved look more quickly. Small flaws may be present in the leather which is normal for this natural material. With the 4 refills this weighs in at 480g so it is a hefty piece!

The leather is a beautiful apple green colour and is both stiff and supple for a journal that holds its shape but still feels lovely to handle.
Inside there are 60 sheets (120 pages) of blank recycled 170gsm cartridge paper in 5 gatherings or signatures. Each signature is hand sewn directly into the cover with a long stitch, using a variegated waxed thread for a stunning spine. The journal is closed with a thong made from a raspberry pink leather for contrast.

Our new Heritage Journal, a beautifully patinated refillable travellers notebook designed to look lived in and well loved from day one and will only get better with age, telling its own colourful story.
Made from leather rescued from the oak pits at the now disused Clayton's tannery in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, it offers a gloriously unique appearance.
Clayton's used an oak tanning process for their veg tan leather, using bark and leaves to create the tannins needed. We've managed to source some of the last batch to be made in those pits before the tannery closed. They have an unusually mottled colouration which we just fell in love with. See the video to see how it looks as the light moves around it.
The leather is finished as a pull up leather - this means that it is impregnated with oils and waxes under heat and as the leather moves and stretches in use it produces a two tone effect.
As this is a finite and not reproducible batch of characterful leather, we've decided to make a limited run of Heritage Journals with it - to offer you a piece of Derbyshire history that will age beautifully and bring you years of joy. Each part of the hide is different in its colouration and feel, so though these notebooks are similar, each is completely unique and will have different markings and characteristics.
A5 in size, we've designed this one with black metal eyelets, a rich dark red waxy veg tan bullhide leather tag and burgundy elastics throughout for an aesthetically satisfying colour palette that looks and feels just right. We hope you love it as much as we do! This one is #2 in the series.
