Handmade beech wand

We here at Makers & Menders are lucky enough to live close to the centre of ancient Sherwood Forest and we enjoy walking in the woods and along local pathways.

Ian started wood carving many years ago and one of the things he made was wands. It made him happy to gift them to friends. Now, when we are out walking he picks up loose branches and trims trees which are obstructing the path or those which have damaged branches (asking permission and offering thanks)… so it seems sensible to put that wood to good use, hence starting wand making again.

ELDRITCH means old kingdom or old times, from Saxon English. At ELDRITCH WANDS everything is done by hand, using only hand tools and natural materials. The branch is carved green (fresh undried timber). Ian lets the branch guide his hand to remove only what is needed to reveal the wand inside. This can produce some very interesting results with some wands being theatrically straight, others gently curved and some zig-zagging as if being straight is a bad thing!! Some are stubby, giving a comforting feel in the hand whilst others are long and elegant offering a purposeful grip.

The wood is then left to air dry naturally. At this stage, if the wand requires it, any decorations can be added – these are usually windings of hemp, cotton , silk or linen and sometimes, semi-precious stones such as amethyst, tigers eye (gold or blue) white or rose quartz, moss or coloured agates and obsidian. At the moment we are having to use modern glue to hold the stones in place, but this is soon to be replaced with wood pitch made by us from tree bark and charcoal to a truly ancient recipe.
