Our notebooks are made with sustainability in mind. Not only are they refillable, and therefore designed to last decades… they are also made with carefully sourced leathers to minimise environmental impact.
We aim to use leathers that fall into one of three categories - deadstock, heritage or recycled.

Why use leather?
At Makers & Menders, we are proud advocates of sustainability and conscious consumerism.
That's why we strongly believe in using recycled upholstery leather for our products. By choosing leather that’s already had a life, we actively contribute to reducing the demand for new animal hides, which in turn helps to minimise the environmental impact of the leather industry.
In contrast to conventional leather production, recycling upholstery leather reduces water consumption, energy usage, and greenhouse gas emissions…. Furthermore, by using recycled leather we make an ethical choice that aligns with our commitment to minimising waste and promoting circularity.
Where we use premium leathers, we try our best to source smaller pieces which are usually surplus skins from the shoe industry - again reducing wastage and demand for new leather.
Although vegan leather alternatives have become increasingly popular in recent years, as they are either plastics based, hugely expensive or lack the robustness of genuine leather we have chosen not to use them.
By incorporating recycled upholstery leather, as well as surplus deadstock leathers, into our products, we not only create beautiful and durable items but also contribute to a more eco-friendly future. We build our notebooks and other leather items to last!
