Scribology - the hand painted collection
Sometimes the leather speaks for itself - sometimes it wants a little jazzing up. The upholstery leather we use for our recycled range has already had a life, so rather than throwing undamaged but tired pieces away, Katie paints them with beautiful designs to give them a totally new lease of life.
Each notebook is painted by hand with durable acrylic paint to add a new dimension to the cover. Every one is unique and represents an original piece of artwork in its own right. Katie paints what inspires her - usually involving lots of colour (especially rainbows), nature, cats and abstract patterns. Standard edition are decorated with markers - Special edition notebooks are delicately painted with tiny brushes and paint.

Special Editions
A Special Edition piece - patiently hand painted with acrylic paint and tiny brushes rather than markers, featuring a beautifully eye-catching beetle. Painted with iridescent paint in turquoise, pinks, blues, greens and coppers, this beetle may be small but it has big presence!
This notebook is made from a beautiful blue-grey recycled leather, it has a nice sheen to it and grain pattern. It is genuine upholstery leather, diverted from landfill and incineration so is hugely eco-friendly.
I’ve chosen a mustard yellow for the elastics, and a bright teal leather closure tag to complement the painting’s palette. The eyelets used are antique brass which tone in beautifully with the blue leather.
You can choose lined or sketch book refills for the inside.

A Special Edition piece which is totally unique! A bright white velvety leather cover, printed directly from leaves and fruits found in my locality.
First I took a piece of alum tawed leather. This is a traditionally made leather that was prolifically used in bookbinding from the 11th through to the 15th centuries due to its unique properties of flexibility, durability and bright white colour. The skin is prepared and then treated with alum salts which tawes the leather rather than tanning it (mineral rather than tannin is involved). The surface is tactile - soft and velvet-like and very strokeable.
I then went into the community woodland nearby and gathered - leaves from hawthorn, oak, flowering currant, plantain; crabapples; maple keys; rosebay willowherb seedheads.
I painted my selection with a range of bright and coppery leather stains and printed them onto the leather, and then speckled the background. The shapes are outlined with a micron pen to give them a graphic feel and make them stand out.
The cover has been treated with an eco-friendly olive oil based sealant to protect it and to keep the white bright. It has antique brass eyelets and burgundy elastics to complement and a mulberry coloured leather closure tag. It also comes with our striking Scribology leather bookmark on a narrow ribbon.
The inserts depicted are blank sketchbooks as I felt this would be a perfect nature inspired sketchbook - but you can switch them out for lined if you prefer!
I made only two of these - one A6 and one A5 slim.
